The West Jackson Community Development Corporation (West Jackson CDC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which serves as an entity for community-based leadership and the revitalization of the community surrounding Jackson State University. The West Jackson CDC has defined a target area that is included in Wards Three and Five. There are several neighborhood organizations operating within the target area. All of the organizations represent sections of the community which have suffered from tragic consequences of urban decay and neglect which have resulted in high unemployment, high crime, a disproportionately large number of families living below the federally designated poverty threshold, absentee landlords, and a blighted environment. Under the leadership of the West Jackson CDC and Jackson State University, five neighborhood associations have become active partners in a concentrated effort to improve the quality of the social and economic environment of the target area. We believe that by combining the efforts of the neighborhood organizations, Jackson State University, local government, financial institutions, etc., the West Jackson CDC will not only have a dramatically positive impact on the communities which are encompassed in this target area, but it will also have the potential of becoming a model partnership between a university, public and private institutions, and organized community associations.
